Was pumped, got a bit disappointed

Been using my Smith for the past 1.5 years and here's what I think of it: Pros: + Good looking bag + Great capacity + Water resistant + Recycled/eco-friendly/cruelty-free materials + Made in the UK (not by exploited Vietnamese or Chinese children) Cons: - Not waterproof (even the main compartment let water inside at some point) - Some of the organising features are not very useful - A bit on the heavy side - No waist strap (it's so uncomfortable and useless that for me it's just non-existent) - Shoulder straps tend to stain with perspiration and it is very hard to clean off - The back pocket are very unpleasant to use when the bag is loaded (which means all the time). They are hard to open, everything is compressed inside, it's hard to put stuff inside and hard to retrieve it - The laptop sleeve pocket is also very unpractical and it will scratch your laptop. To get your computer inside, you need to get through the zipper and since the pocket is very snug, it will press onto the back of the screen and the bottom of your laptop. This is a serious issue if, like me, you are a student and will put your computer in and out of the bag 5 or 6 times a day. All in all, it breaks my heart to say that I don't recommend this bag. It's lack of practicality if you are a laptop user is a deal-breaker for students and its weight and lack of waist strap is a deal-breaker for backpackers who want to carry a heavier load. It is good for day trips, but it's lack of versatility is a bummer.

Everyday companion

5

I fell in love with this backpack when I was a student in 2017 and I was searching for a good everyday backpack with a practical laptop sleeve. Since then I carry him every single day, cycle my way to work and take him for grocery shoppings. This Roll Pack is spacious, practical and most important (in the city) good-looking! Because of it´s grab handle it is easy to carry and and the little pockets inside provide enough different places to hide your things. Sadly he is a bit worn out now and dirty, which is difficult to clean. Nevertheless I can strongly recommend it.

Great customer service (and the bags good too)

I received one of these roll packs as a Christmas present in 2018. It saw me through my cycle commute and other travels through 2019. I was very happy with it. It saw a further couple of months of use this year before the lockdown but was then put in a cupboard. I took it out last week to use for the first time since March and the zip on the laptop pocket broke. This was rather disappointing given that it was less than 18 months old. I got in contact with Millican to see if it could be repaired. Within 24 hours I had received a reply. I was offered a replacement as they could not repair at present. I accepted and within 48 hours I had a new bag. This was really excellent customer service. Despite the zip, I am very impressed with the design and functionality of my bag but even more impressed by the Millican's commitment to their customers.

An admired piece

This pack has picked up a clutch of compliments over the years. I have the rust version, but all Millican colours are nicely judged IMHO. I use this as my commuter, shopping, day pack and it performs admirably no matter the task. I removed the waist belt to simplify things even more - it helps that the sternum strap is a great design - and I don't miss it. I've had the bag 4 years now and the fabric has picked up some stains and scrapes, but there's no hint at failure. The laptop sleeve is also intelligently designed being slightly raised from the base. A great product that's become a daily companion.

Practical and Smart

5

I bought this to replace my ageing Alpkit Gourdon. I already have a large pack for longer hikes and needed a smaller day bag that could be used for work too. I had heard of Millican previously, but happened to see one of their packs on my way to Copenhagen and was struck by how clean and smart it looked. After ordering direct from Millican I was impressed that it arrived so quickly and I was pleased with the ember colour. I also like lack of zips to break and the robustness of the metal fittings, though they do sometimes require re-tightening if the bag is really stuffed. The fabric seems pretty tough too and in case of impending nuclear holocaust, could possibly provide some shelter. It also seems to hold more than the stated volume, probably due to the roll top, swallowing coats and jumpers for an adult and two kids as well as a small picnic and flasks. If I had a wish to improve it, it would be to have the bottle/flask pockets of the 25l on the sides though that would detract from the clean lines. Otherwise pretty close to perfect.

One of the best backpacks for your daily commute

5

I have an Osprey backpack that I love. However, when I was traveling with my laptop, my backpack didn't have a space for holding the computer, and I have to always bring with me a rain cover for it (just in case it started to rain). Recently I started to get my bike to take my kid to school, and sometimes I needed to bring my laptop with me as I moved from the school to my office. At this moment, my Osprey was not doing well because what I mentioned before: the laptop was moving a lot, and it was a bit uncomfortable. Thus, I started looking for a new backpack. I think I was fortunate to find a review about Millican on a blog post or news site. I read it, watched the video and loved it. I knew it was my backpack. I ordered it, got home really quickly (I live in Spain), and I started to use it almost every day. The result? One of the best. In the beginning, the backpack is a bit hard, and you cannot fit the laptop easily (mine is a 15.6, and you have to struggle a bit to get it in there). However, over time, the bag starts to be softer and you can fit it without problems. In summary, I love the backpack. It looks awesome when I go to work or anywhere else, and it holds everything I need.

Superb

I already own the 25L version of this which is great for weekends but was looking for a smaller day bag to cover light travels with only the bare essentials - Laptop, notebook, chargers etc. Tried the 15L version first but a little small for my height (6ft4in), returned for this one which is perfect. Millican continue to excel themselves in both build quality and style.

A stylish bag for life

5

If I'm honest, I can't remember how I found out about Millican, but I am so pleased I did. I spent ages looking for a rucksack that perfectly matched simplicity with quality: I didn't want bells and whistles and wanted a bag for life as I try not to buy throwaway items. The lack of plastic buckles really reinforced this. This a good looking bag - it's the first bag I have received random unsolicited compliments with. I toyed with getting the 25L but thankfully the 18L is still roomy enough, with a sleeker look. I use daily for my job (laptop sleeve is one of the best I've used as it stops the laptop above the bottom of the bag so you don't whack it on the floor when you put it down); I have also hauled it around hiking, and it is perfectly comfy for both. I have fitted laptop, notebook, books, lunch and gym kit (including shoes!) in this bag. I was recently looking for something slightly roomier for weekend trips that fits airline hand luggage requirements. After my satisfaction with this roll pack, I wasn't going to look anywhere else and have just ordered myself the Miles Duffle. The only weakness with this roll pack is that the small items pocket opposite the laptop sleeve doesn't seem to work too well - the compartment in it and key ring (who uses these?) jars items being slid into it. Other than that minor qualm, I am entirely happy with it. I couldn't recommend this company or their products more.

Form and function in perfect harmony

5

This bag has now seen 2 months of constant use, from commuting by bike or run in the UK, off-piste skiing in Chamonix, business meetings in Europe, to day trips with the kids. It is more comfortable than my old KIMM/ OMM sac for running (especially with a laptop in), with only a slight weight penalty. The use/ abuse from the above is visible, but there is no sign of wear. The design is extremely well thought out and perfect for my needs. I hope/ expect this bag to be used daily for years to come. I cannot recommend highly enough.

Beautiful design with a few compromises.

5

I bought this 18L Smith in the sale in the old umber colour - it was a real steal! I love the minimalist look and the straps are really comfy with a 10kg load. I love how adaptable it is with the option to cinch it down or expand. I've brought it on a 6 week road trip and so far it's held up really well in summer weather with occasional rain, seems really water resistant. Internal organisation is good, though tricky to see inside I imagine with the darker coloured fabric and it can feel a bit like a bucket to load up. I love the secret pockets on the back - great to quickly grab your laptop, but I do wish the pockets were the other way around with the laptop furthest back. Build quality and stitching is impressive, the aluminium buckles feel really premium and love the strap retainers. Only gripe would be that a water bottle pocket would seriously improve versatility - bit of a pain to open the whole bag every time. But then again you know this before you buy and could choose the pocket option if it's important to you. In future I might buy a pocket version for hiking days.
